All About College Credit Cards

College credit cards are the credit cards that have been specially designed for college students. College credit cards are more popularly known as student credit cards. College credit cards allow the students to experience the benefits of credit cards much earlier in their life. Through college credit cards, the college students are able to learn more about credit cards and their use. In fact, for most of the students, their college credit card is their first credit card that acts as a gateway to the world of credit cards. Some other students might have previously used supplementary credit cards linked to their father’s credit card account; however, for such students too, their college credit card is the first one that is truly theirs.

College credit cards are not very different from other types of credit cards in the basic sense; they function in the same way as any credit card would. However, there are some differences, which basically arise from the fact that college credit cards are used by people who have no prior experience with credit cards and who perhaps don’t understand the concept of credit cards completely. Hence, the credit card supplier is at risk with issuing credit cards (college credit cards) to such people whom he is not sure about. Most of the students don’t have a credit history either. In such a case, the supplier of college credit card cannot be sure of receiving the credit card bill payments in time (and even receiving them at all). To counter such risks, the supplier of college credit card requires the parent of the student to co-sign the college credit card application form as a guarantee.

Moreover, the credit limit on college credit cards is generally around $500-$1000 per month, which is lower than what it is for other credit cards (this credit limit is generally sufficient to fulfil the typical needs of a student). Another risk mitigation instrument used by the college credit card suppliers is the interest rate or APR. The APR on college credit cards is generally higher than that for other credit cards. Again, this is done to dissuade the students from overspending on their college credit card (and finally not being able to pay their credit card bills).

However, if we were to look at these impositions in a positive sense, we would find that these are actually in favour of the student (who is still getting trained to take on the real world of credit cards). Moreover, college credit cards also help the students in establishing a (good) credit history which is another important benefit that becomes handy when the student needs any type of loan at a later stage in his/her life.

So, college credit cards are really something that every student should consider going for.

Prepaid Visa and MasterCard Debit Cards (aka “Prepaid Credit Cards”)

Nowadays there are many options to carrying cash, and the one choice that is gaining popularity is the Prepaid Debit Card, also known as the Prepaid Credit Card. Although these debit cards are being advertised on television, radio and the internet, their use and purpose is clouded in mystery. We will explain what they are and how to use the prepaid debit card.

Terms to Know

• Branding - Adding Visa or MasterCard logo to a debit card, thereby backing the debit card with the benefits and security of these credit card companies.

• Debit - Deducting from an existing balance.

• Load - Adding money to the balance of the card.

• Reload - Ability to add more money to the balance once the original ‘loaded’ balance has been depleted.

“Prepaid Credit Card” - Debunking the Myth

First, we will clear up the most common misconception with these cards. They are not credit cards in the traditional sense. A “traditional” credit card is a card that draws off a credit line balance with each use/purchase. A prepaid debit card is a card with either a Visa or MasterCard logo and can be used to pay for goods or services anywhere Visa or MasterCard is accepted, however all purchases are drawn from a prepaid balance that you have loaded onto the card. Once the balance has reached $0, you are no longer able to use the card for purchasing until the balance is reloaded.

Evolution of an Industry

In the beginning, in terms of banking, there was an Automated Teller Machine debit card. This type of card allowed the holder to access their bank account balance without having to physically go into the bank. The ATM card holder was able to go to a new type of cash access point (the Automated Teller Machine) usually located outside their bank and get cash out, debiting from the available cash balance of their bank account. As this new type of bank account debiting system evolved, merchants and banks teamed up to allow ATM card holders to access their bank accounts at various locations, such as a grocery store or other kiosk ATM machines located around town.

Through gradual progression of the financial industry, Visa and MasterCard got involved and joined the efforts of banks and merchants to brand the ATM card with either the Visa or MasterCard logo. These new Visa or MasterCard branded ATM debit cards now had the ability to be used to pay for goods and services anywhere a Visa or MasterCard credit card was accepted, while still drawing off the bank account balance the ATM card is associated with.

The next step for Visa and MasterCard was to create standalone “Gift Cards”, which were originally loaded with a prepaid balance and could be used just as a Visa or MasterCard, but purchases were debited from the actual prepaid balance, and required no bank account. These Gift Cards could not have their balance reloaded.

This brings us current to today’s financial landscape, where Visa and MasterCard have introduced prepaid debit cards, which operate like a hybrid ATM card (minus the bank account) and Gift Card (but the balance can be re-added to). The card holder can load money onto the debit card, can access the balance anywhere that Visa and MasterCard is accepted, and can reload money onto the card balance.

The Visa or MasterCard Prepaid Debit Card

Now that you have a good idea of what a prepaid debit card is (and what it isn’t), it’s time to find out what the benefits are of having this new type of debit card.

Features and Benefits

• No Credit Check - A credit check is required when you apply for credit, since you are going to be trusted to pay the debt back. Since you are adding cash onto the card, and since the balance cannot go into the negative, you are not going to be in a situation where you are required to pay anything back, or owe any money from exceeding the balance.

• Safety and Security - Carrying cash nowadays is a risky venture. If you lose cash, you are out that amount of money and cannot conceivably recover the amount. Since you can load or reload the balance of a prepaid card with cash (almost anywhere), and since the cash balance on the card is branded by either the Visa or MasterCard logo, the same security and fraud protection is extended to the prepaid balance. If the card is lost or stolen, the prepaid card holder is not held liable for any fraudulent transactions. Your money is safe and secure.

• Bank Account Features - Most prepaid debit cards have bank account features, such as check writing privileges (the amount of the check is deducted from the card balance). You can also have your employer (although employment is not required to apply for card) directly deposit your payroll check onto the card balance. Since these are very attractive incentives, most prepaid debit cards have these features.

• Reload the Balance Anywhere - Most prepaid debit cards allow you to reload the balance almost anywhere. You can load via PayPal, at most bank branches, any Western Union or MoneyGram location and even by cashiers check or money order.

• Shopping on the Internet - Nowadays, you can’t be too safe when shopping online. Prepaid debit cards are a great choice in this situation because you can determine how much to load onto the card and since the balance cannot go into the negative, the chances of someone accessing your card information and running up a horrendous debt are non-existent.

• Other Benefits and Features - Since prepaid debit cards are branded with either the Visa or MasterCard logs, the prepaid cards have the same perks of regular credit cards. Some of these perks include roadside assistance, auto rental insurance, extensions on original manufacturer warranties, automatic bill pay and even merchandise rewards and cash rebates.

The Bottom Line

The best way to carry cash nowadays is a prepaid debit card. It’s also a great way to give a gift or pay kids an allowance. As a gift, the prepaid card is an excellent choice because the prepaid card is accepted anywhere, and doesn’t limit the recipient to one particular store or service. As a child’s allowance tool its ideal, since the transactions on a prepaid debit card can be tracked and accounted for, down to the last penny. As an online shopping resource, it’s handy because the card balance cannot be exploited. As a straight cash card, it can be used anywhere and just as safe as a credit card.

Good luck and remember to read all the facts and find out all the information before making important financial decisions.

When Daddy’s Little Boy Wants to be Mama’s Little Girl

In my entire life I had never seen my father’s uncovered body. Everyone
was expected to be fully dressed at all times, morning, noon, and night,
either dressed in street clothes or sleepwear. There were no exceptions.
Daddy would send you away from the supper table if you dared expect
to dine in a T-shirt. But the times were different now. If my father needed
to be moved or roll over onto his side, I helped my mother.

I was shaving. One day at the age of 14, when my father saw what I was
doing and asked if I was going to get some of that shaving cream out of
my ears before I left the house. I continued trying to shave even though
there was little if any hair on my face or for that matter any where else.
Daddy also asked where I was headed to anyway. I said I was going to
a movie.

“Really,” he said. He probably figured I was headed to downtown
Kernersville, NC with my brother or sister, or perhaps even the cute girl
across street. But he asked anyway. “Who are going with to the
movies?” he calmly asked.

He was not really prepared for my response. Not many fathers are, and
frankly, I was not prepared for my response to his question either.

With my face covered with shaving cream, I looked up at my fathera
mountain of a man, standing six feet tall with chiseled muscles on a
large frame, and with an expression of such affection and love glowing
through all that formand I said, “with Ronald!”

When Wit Taylor, my father, was bedridden, weak from radiation and
chemotherapy, and nearing death, he showed me for the first time his
collection of photographs that he kept locked in a safe. I asked him to tell
me about the people in the photographs, all my relatives, and when he
did I would write a small number on the back of the photograph and log
the names, dates, place with any other information he could remember
on a separate piece of paper. Dad and I did this for almost three days.
He gave me his collection of photographs. The oldest one is a
photograph of my grandfather, Robert Paul Taylor, in his World War I
army uniform. I have pictures of my grandmother and my great-
grandmother.

With that, the expression of tenderness and joy upon seeing the only
male heir, the only Taylor left to bear the family name, taking his first
steps toward so-called manhood by shaving, were replaced with the
heavy concerns and burdens of fathers everywhere. He knew that look
on my face and the sparks in my eyes for a boy who lived across town
meant that this was no ordinary friendship. I was in love, and it was not
the neighbor’s daughter that caught my fancy. He moved closer and
said, “Didn’t you have dinner with him last night, and lunch today, and
the two of you are going to a movie together tonight?”
“It is just a movie,” I said sheepishly.

He moved closer; I grew frightened, and he said, “We already have one
Mark in the family. We do not need two!”
That was all my father ever said to me about being gay. He wanted me
to know he was no fool.

I shaved daddy for the first time in my life, and he would let me, calm
and smiling. One time a friend of my mother’s from church brought
daddy some clears oils I believed had been blessed by our pastor.
Daddy wanted mother to rub it on his back. She bristled and instructed
me to do it. What! Me?”

I had never touched my father’s shoulders.
I proceeded to rub the oils and became more aware of the moment, and
of his pending death, and of my own someday. While I was rubbed the
oils, his physicality, even at 76 years of age, shockingly resembled my
own. Even though I was 40 some years his junior, I could see the shape
of his fingers, how they remind me of a childhood memory of the way his
fingers resembled fat cigars, and now how my own fingers look the
same. How his skin, though weak and old, draped on his body over his
bones and muscles felt familiar to me. His muscles, that at one time
fought for more room insides his work clothes, are the same pinecone
brown color as mine. It will all become a memory, causing me to wonder
if the dead ever remember that at one time they were alive.

But he never stopped me from seeing Ronald, or anyone else for that
matter and years later he often encouraged me to bring my boyfriends to
the house. “I will deal with your mother,” Daddy told me. Ronald and I
were lovers throughout high school and would later join the same
fraternity-Chi Phi at UNC-Chapel Hill. My father knew who and what he
was raising and he never mistreated me–or tried to make a man out of
me. And because he never beat me or abused me in an attempt to
toughen me up in a time during the late ’50s and early ’60s, when doing
so would have been consider the right and proper thing for a father to do
when confronted with an effeminate son, I will always cherish his
memory. I know at least one man in my life truly loved me, and that man
was indeed my father.

“If you don’t want these I am going to throw them out,” my mother told
me when I was back home visiting. They were love letters written to my
father before he and my mother were married. She also gave me a 1922
silver dollar from my father’s coin collection, his drivers’ license, and a
pair of shoes, cuff links, handkerchiefs, and key chains. And a photo
album. An album of proud men: strong men, and their wives.

When “daddy’s little boy” wanted to be “mommy’s little girl,” I knew I was
in trouble. I wanted to knit, sew, bake cookies, quilt, and paint, kiss boys,
and play nurse. Now at 45 years old, I create art by adorning women’s
handbags with colored pins, puzzle pieces, beads, mementos, and
charms. I know I can do these things because I have the support and
grace of a loving father in my heart

Gordon Brown Reveals Modified Rescue Project, Will This Help The UK Economy

The Prime Minister of Great Britain has published a recent rescue plan to improve the stability of the banks, to help banks. The project includes an insurance scheme to save banks from next toxic debts. The banks covered must pay for the cover, but not in shares. However all that technique means the cost of living will crash, deflation will push saving although this could dampen the British economic situation.

Auk properties continued to collapse at a record rate, and the country’s most large mortgage lender, Halifax, forecasting, a sixteen % yearly decline in the last three months of 2008. Prices have already gone down 0.2 from their peak in 2007 and more declines are likely as consents for home mortgages are at its lowest record, according to figures. Currency exchange is made easy with Foreign Currency Direct.

The number of job seekers surged past 1 million in at the end of last year. climbing at a fast rate since last recession. The credit crunch has pushed lots of professions losses in several different markets, with some forecasts of more than 3 million unemployed by the end of 2010. High Street retails went out of business in the last weeks. Stores have been dropping prices to be able to pay last year debts.

The fiscal policy decisions of the British government are mainly concentrated on recovering the financial system and do not help the currency. Which means GB sterling is probably going to drop. We may be seeing the sterling going up but forecasts for pound is not that good.

Recent figures amongst analysts showed an 80% chance the Monetary Committee will slice borrowing costs to 1.25 % from 2 points, putting the interest rate to its lowest since the seventeen century.

This means less profits for brokers who then invest in other currencies, since the value of the pound is down.

Some policymakers have announced the Bank of England will have to cut the rates to zero and opt the only solution, essentially producing fresh currency to push the financial situation. This appears to go well with Gordon Brown’s plans of trying their way out of the recession crisis, which is the opposite of most Western nations attitude, which is a possible cause for the big decline in Pound compared to the and American Dollar.

Teaching Students To Keep Out Of Credit Card Debt - The Parents’ Role

Parents have the full responsibility for their children and their education. It is up to parents to teach their children what’s right and what’s wrong, how to conduct themselves as good citizens, how to cross the road safely and generally protect themselves from harm. In fact, up until the time that child is an adult, the parents have responsibilities in every part of that child’s life, right up until the time they are a college student.

The influence of the parents, however, goes way beyond college student days. Whether they like it or not, or even admit it, everyone is influenced not only by the way their parents have treated them, but also by the behavioural patterns of the parents. That influence can be good, bad or neutral, but it is there, and it affects many aspects of daily lives. One of the main features of daily life is finance: money, debt, borrowing, lending, spending, and credit cards all fall within that sphere.

It follows that parents can have an influence on their children’s attitude to credit cards and credit card debt. As a good teacher, mentor and financial adviser, the parent can help to create a positive financial attitude in their children that will help them through their college student days, and eliminate or prevent credit card debt from their future lives.

What Can A Parent Do To Help Their Student Children Prevent Debt?

Parents are not the only influence on their children. They and their children face a barrage of marketing for credit cards that has reached brainwashing proportions. Easy credit pervades society like a highly contagious virus; it is difficult enough for the parents not to succumb to the debt that follows easy credit, let alone their student children. And if the parents succumb, what chance do the children have?

Well, all is not entirely lost. All parents know, or should know, that trying to force feed attitudes and habits on their maturing children is likely to backfire. Many children are rebellious, and will often be inclined to go against the parents wishes or advice. That would apply as much to teaching how to manage their finances as anything else.

However, if you accept that you cannot just force something on your children, you can bring them up in an environment that may, through their own observation, make the children think twice about running up credit card debts as a student, and later still in their lives. Here are just a few ideas:

1. Get the children into the saving habit from a young age, but do it in a way that let’s them see the benefits. Start a savings account for them even as a one year old, and as they get a bit older, just explain to them what it is and why. No harsh lectures, just a simple explanation that you are helping them to save money for something they will appreciate later. But not too much into the future; saying they will not be able to touch it until they are 25 will not help.

The savings theme can be on two levels. Part of the savings could be long term, but part also for something the child will be able to buy within a year. That way, the child has the anticipation of a benefit within a reasonable time; the balance of the savings can go on to accumulate. Ensure you have a savings account that will pay interest on all money in the account, so that when the first and subsequent interest payments are posted to the account, you can show the child that they have this “bonus” in their account. Explain it is the bank paying them money for leaving their savings in the account.

It is important for the child to feel that it is their money that is being saved, so explain it is part of their pocket money being put away. Also encourage them, but not force them, to sometimes put birthday or other gift money in the account too. Over the years, this will, hopefully, become a habit that is a useful contra to the debt culture. They will get used to the bank paying them, so when it comes to considering credit cards later, they may be more likely to question the large interest charges the bank makes for using the credit cards.

2. Encourage children to earn a bit of extra pocket money by doing little jobs around the house or in the garden. Say this will help them save for whatever it is they want to save for. Car washing, mowing the lawn when old enough, vacuuming; whatever needs to be done, ask if they would like to do the jobs for the extra money. Then, when paid, encourage them, but do not force them, to save at least part of the earnings. Again, this could become a habit that will stand them in good stead later on, and they will tend to consider the working route to extra money rather than expensive borrowing.

3. When they start doing more advanced maths, say at 9 or 10 years old, help them do a little budget plan for their savings. That will be a simple but quite mature approach for them.

4. The most difficult of all is to set a good example, but do not make a big fuss about it. Mention casually once in a while, for example when there’s a commercial on television for a credit card, that the charges are so high, but it is probably best not to give serious lectures and warnings about credit cards and debt. Try not to use credit cards yourself, especially lavishly and in front of the children.

There is not guarantee that any of the above will make one iota of difference, but at least, as with many aspects of parenting, you have given it your best shot.

How To Be An Inspiration To Everybody!

You’ve probably come across the famous line from Emerson saying that our fondest wish is someone who will make us do what we can do.

Perhaps, but most of us experience a hangover of negativity when we feel we’re being MADE to do anything. Compulsion and freedom don’t make friendly companions.

Still, we need to get things done, to get off the dime, to make progress and definitely, to break out of procrastination.

In a word we need inspiration. One of the best ways to get it is to practice inspiring others, and here are some tips for doing it:

(1) Stay visibly occupied. People are imitators, and when they see you’re busy, suddenly, they’ll get an urge to place that languishing, but important phone call to the dentist to set that teeth cleaning appointment.

(2) Smile. Nearly every one, apart from the Gothic Rocker your teenager is dating, wants to be happy. When they ask what’s making you so happy, just say, “I don’t know,” and get back to number one, staying busy!

(3) Never complain, unless that is, you’re at death’s door, and then do it politely. Don’t pity yourself, or join other people’s pity parties. If they say, “Life sucks!” respond with “Okay!” and get back to number one!

(4) Stay focused on results, not getting hung up on minutia. You’ll accomplish a lot, without fanfare, and people will admire you and want to emulate you. When they ask, “How do you get so much done?” just say, “I don’t know” with a big smile, and get back to number one!

(5) Don’t ever volunteer advice. The worst way to try to change someone is by trying to change someone. Lead by example, and if you ever forget how to do this, just go back to number one!

Stick to this plan and you’ll be an inspiration to everybody, including yourself!

Australia and Italy Leave UK Lagging in Mobile Broadband

Italy will soon have its very own 28Mbps mobile broadband service. Telecom Italia and Ericsson, the Swedish technology firm have been working on this project for a long time, and it is finally ready to be launched in June, with Milan being the first city to enjoy this facility. The service will be launched for the entire country in the later half of the year.

Ericsson is one of the leading telecom technology companies in the world. It has been actively working on developing the HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) technology. The latest technology that the firm plans to incorporate in Italy’s mobile broadband service is that of MIMO (Multiple Input and Multiple Output) which will allow faster downloads because of data transmission through more than two antenna branches.

Italy’s mobile broadband launch follows the launch of a 21Mb mobile broadband service by the Australian firm Telstra, which is currently offering its services to business customers as a start with a full-fledged rollout expected in April this year. However, in light of the Australian pricing being extremely high, it is expected that users in Italy too will have to pay a steep price to enjoy the fast broadband service.

Irrespective of the costs, the benefits of the new network are certainly going to be substantial, as the service in Italy is believed to be four times faster than similar 3g internet services in the UK. It is not yet clear whether the new service would be able to tackle problems like lower ‘actual connection speeds’ caused due to local conditions like the weather hampering the smooth functioning of the service.
